Angela M. says: Born and raised in Cache/Lawton(Ft. Sill) area. We are currently stationed here now. The post community is good. New housing built within the last 5 years and new divisions in construction now. PX is relatively small in comparison to other posts and bases of equal size (per capita). Commissary was updated within the last couple of years. There are splash parks swimming pools horseback riding trails fishing ponds hunting areas and a private lake recreational area that are great during the spring and summer months. Off-post: housing varies as with any post. There are several surrounding communities with access to nearby post gates with properties available for rent and for sale. We are located near the Wichita Mountains and the Wildlife Refuge which offer a multitude of outdoor activities. This mountain range surprisingly also provides the occasional earthquake. These quakes from this fault line are never more than a 3.0. The area is mostly rural. Country living is the way of life for most folks. But that is not the only way! There are many many places to go see things to do. It really depends on your preference. If you prefer city life OKC is not too far away. Bricktown is nice. That area offers many professional major league and collegiate sporting events; as well as concerts and other events.

The businesses in Lawton vary as greatly as the Oklahoma weather at any given moment. You'll find that the area while not laden with strip malls and outlet stores it does offer enough to provide you with choices ranging from Wranglers and boots to high-end men's wear.

Kristen H. says: Ft. Sill is a fairly quiet community. There's a hiring freeze on post for the most part. In town jobs that pay well are not in good supply. Most of the stores needed are here in town but if you want Target Best Buy large malls OKC & Wichita Falls is better for shopping. Rentals here are older but if you are looking to buy there are many new communities being built. As far as post the ACS ~ & MWR have excellent program. There's also a pilot program off post clinic for Family members called Frontier Mountain Home & it's awesome! The commissary & px are decent could be bigger.

Amber W. says: The people at Ft. Sill and the surrounding area are wonderful. However due to brac there have been so many people flooding into the Lawton/Ft.Sill area that it is overflowing. The city of Lawton can't keep up with the roadwork. There is a lack of good housing and good paying jobs are hard to come by. The cost of living in that area is very low. There is far more to do around the Ft. Lee area if you are the city life type. Ft Sill is more the country life there isn't exactly much in the way of good shopping unless you drive up to OKC or down to Wichita Falls TX.

Alexa T. asks: What is a good area to live in? My fiance is stationed at Fort Sill now. I will be making my way there in the summer. I'm looking for a good neighborhood.  Any suggestions?

Ashley S. says: Outside city limits

Anita H. says: On base lol

Hilary M. says: I live on the East side of Lawton and I love it. Its quiet and the crime is a lot less. Good luck house hunting!

Xtina R. says: I lived on the East side and it was pretty safe. I worked on the West side and it was ok. More towards in between is where you hear more about breakings and robberies. It never hurts to just keep your guard up and carry a palm size flashlight/stun gun just in case ;)

Lupita M. says: I live in southwest city perimeter and is awesome really quiet plus we have an awesome school Bishop Elementary. :)

Andrea M. says: I live on the far West side and it's "ok". If you go further West into new housing or East side of I-44 it's better. Or like Ashley said not even in Lawton. Elgin to the North and Geronimo to the South are supposed to be nice areas it just depends on how far from the base you want to be.

Ashley S. says: I live on base now. Way better than living on Sheridan road!

Barbara W. says: NW is good you can go on crimestoppers and find out where all the sexual offenders are. Thus far none are listed for my area. I live down the street from the Walmart on 6301 Nw Quannah Parker Trl Lawton OK 73505 very nice area.

Melissa P. says: The West side or East side. I own a home off of 82nd and it's a gorgeous little area. Steer clear of the middle of Lawton.

Casey B. says: Do not go to Ft. Sill Oklahoma. Horrible here nothing to do off post especially if you have kids..the on post housing is very nice but off post is crappy.  I don't recommend anyone asking to get stationed here.  Many I have met here feel the same way!

Dominique G. asks: Hi Ladies!! I am curious what the on-post fence rental is at Ft. Sill and elsewhere as we are moving next to Vilseck Germany for 3 years and could need to do this. Depending on the dollar amount we might look at other options. THANKS.

Paula C. says:It's $20 a month.

Cetoria S. says: On base here it varies depending on yard size but in some places you don't rent a fence. Here I pay $33.00 but I have a huge yard and a dog run added.

Anita H. says: I pay 25 a month but if u pay a yr in advance u get 3 months free

Kelly M. says: I know people that have fences and don't pay a dime for them. . There are 2 different companies that rent fences. Lots of houses already have fences. Sometimes they just wont come take them down. I would just compare the two then pick who is the best for what you need.

Ashley S. says: We live in Geronimo Acres on Fort Sill and pay $20 a month.

Ashley C. says: crossing on post from arnold's fence co. $30 a month.

We have been at Fort Sill for about 6 months now. We arrived at the end of July 2010. The waiting list for on post housing is 9 months to a year. Picerne Military Housing said it is leaning more to a year wait at this point. If PCSing here you want to get put on the waiting list ASAP! Lawton is a sketchy town like one of the other ladies said. We live off of NW Cache Rd, sort of by Wal-Mart. There are two Wal-Marts here. The newer Wal-Mart that we live by is located off of Quannah Parker Trway. We live in a decent neighborhood, but still it is not as safe as I would like it to be. When you first get orders here, start researching the neighborhoods, and call some of the local Realtors here. They do more than help you buy houses, they also help with looking for places to rent. Do not rent from Sundance! Just my advice. I have heard nothing but awful stories, and they seem to take advantage of military couples. We rent from Parker Jones and so far is has been nice. Call all the local Realtors though, and choose the best one for you and your family. When your spouse first gets here they will give them information about Realtors, and different houses in the area, but you probably want to get a head start. I wish we would have. We had to hurry and make a decision on a house, because we were running our of money to stay at the hotels. Try to have appointments set up when you arrive to check out some houses to rent, if you do in fact have to live off post. Also call ahead for a reservation for a hotel here so you know you will have a place to stay when you first get here. Since this is a BCT/AIT post the hotels are always full with family coming for graduation. The hotel on post is almost always full, so that is just a heads up.

As for things to do around here there is a Wildlife Refugee in the next little town over called Cache. You can drive all the way through it. It is great for the kids to see the local wildlife. There is a little local mall with stores like Old Navy, JcPenny, Journeys, ect. There are also many restaurants here too. Chili?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s, Olive Garden, and Outback just to name a few. The town is a little country feeling town. The locals can be a bit rude sometimes, but over all the people are nice. The post itself is one of the bigger post. It takes a few tries to get use to where everything is. Everything you need is right in one little place though. Like the Commissary and the PX are back to back. It is really cold in the winters, and very hot in the summers. Oklahoma City is about an hour and twenty minutes away. There is a zoo and science museum. Norman, Oklahoma is just before OKC and it is a college town.

As with any post you have to make the best of your duty station. Some may like it, and others may not.

We have been stationed here at Fort Sill since January 2010 and I laugh when I hear people say ?¢‚Ǩ?ìthere?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s nothing to do?¢‚Ǩ¬ù here. There are SO many activities on post to take advantage of!!! At the Outdoor Rec Center on post you can rent boats, campers, tents, bikes ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú everything down to a frisbee to have fun outdoors! They offer excursion trips through MWR (google Fort Sill MWR). There is a lake on post (google LETRA) with a nice little beach area!! Plus, they just built cabins to rent. Playgroups & activities offered through ACS. If you have little ones, check out Caravan Club at ACS, it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a free monthly field trip. MWR offers a ton of free exercise classes ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú to include family oriented ones.
Lawton has more of a country town feel, you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve got your Walmart, Sam?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Club, Kmart, and small shopping mall (google Central Mall), and the community is so kind. If you like the outdoors, you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll have so many lakes, parks, etc to check out. There?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a great park on 38th St. (Kid?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Zone) it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s fairly new. Camping & fishing opportunities all over!! A lot of history to take in. Lawton is about a 45 minute drive to Wichita Falls, TX. That?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s where you will find a lot more stores for shopping. Usually the little towns around Lawton have something going on. Right now we?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re approaching County Fair season. Be sure to pick up a Red River Family Magazine at the ACS or Commissary?¢‚Ǩ¬¶there?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s always a calendar of events inside.
Houses are quite small here. Mostly because many are older (built in the 50?¢‚Ǩ¬?s) and have renovated their 1 car garage into living space. We rent off of 44th St. and have never had an issue with violence. Ridgecrest Elem school is wonderful ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú my kids?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ grades improved tremendously even after we moved in the middle of the school year. Overall, it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s what you make of it. I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢d say this is a nice little stop for our Army Adventure, until we PCS again soon. Good luck on your PCS!!

For renting at Ft Sill, you will want to be west of 53rd street or East of the Interstate. There are some pretty sketchy areas in Lawton. We were there from 2002-2004 and rented in a great little neighborhood east of the interstate near city limits on Lomond Lane. FT Sill is about 90 miles from Oklahoma City and Wichita Falls, TX. There really was no shopping in Lawton and not much to do in ?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ Lawton. We took alot of out of town shopping trips. The Armed Services YMCA in Lawton was great for babies and young children and Lawton had a really neat Playground for the kids. The Wichita Mtns Wildlife Refuge and Mt Scott were great to see and hike. We also enjoyed the Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area.
